How to say “Where are you?” in Russian

The most-sent text message in any language. In Russian it is two words and the pronoun comes first.

Quick answer

Ты где?

ty gdye — two words, no verb — and the word order is the natural one

The options

Ты где?Where are you? — informal
Вы где?Where are you? — polite
Где ты?Where are you? — also correct, slightly more neutral
Ты далеко́?Are you far away?
Ты ещё не вы́шел?Haven’t you left yet?

Why ты где?

Russian word order is free, and the last word carries the emphasis. Ты где? puts the weight on где — the thing you want to know — which is why it is the version people actually text. Где ты? is equally correct and sounds a touch calmer.
