On the phone

A phone call strips away gestures and lip-reading, so it needs its own set of ready-made lines.

Answer with Алло́ or Слу́шаю. Ask for someone with Мо́жно…? plus their name in the accusative.

The whole call

Hello?
Hello, this is Martin. May I speak to Anna?
One moment.
Sorry, bad line. Please call back.
Fine, talk later.

Алло́ is for phones only

Never walk into a room saying алло́. It exists purely for picking up a call. In person you say здра́вствуйте or приве́т.

Typical mistakes

Russian does not add “speaking” when identifying yourself.

The person asked for is in the accusative.

Check yourself

When do you say
