Which form to learn first
ви́жу and ви́дишь — “I see” and “do you see?”, the two you need when someone points at something.
ви́деть or смотре́ть?
Ви́деть is what your eyes do by themselves; смотре́ть is what you do on purpose. You see a mistake in a text, you watch a film: Я смотрю́ фильм, not Я ви́жу фильм.
Typical mistakes

Я ви́жу.
The д turns into ж in the я form — like ходи́ть → хожу́.

Я смотрю́ телеви́зор ка́ждый ве́чер.
Watching on purpose is смотре́ть.
