How to say “I’m here” in Russian

Two words that need no verb — and three ways to say them.

Quick answer

Я здесь.

ya zdyes — two words, and no verb needed

The options

Я здесь.I’m here.
Я тут.I’m here. — more colloquial
Я на ме́сте.I’m at the spot. · I’ve arrived.
Я уже́ пришёл / пришла́.I’ve already arrived. — on foot
Я вас ви́жу!I can see you!

No verb

Russian has no present tense of быть, so Я здесь is a complete sentence. Adding есть would be archaic. The same applies to Он до́ма, Мы на ме́сте and Все тут.

Arrived, on foot or by transport

Я пришёл / пришла́ — I came on foot. Я прие́хал / прие́хала — I came by transport. The choice between them is the same motion-verb logic as иду́ and е́ду, and Russians do notice it.

What you hear back

Иду́!Coming!
Где и́менно?Where exactly?
Ви́жу тебя́.I see you.
Жди там.Wait there.

Typical mistakes

Я есть здесь.

Я здесь.

No “am” in the Russian present.

Я прие́хал — after walking

Я пришёл.

On foot takes прийти́.
