How to say “Can I try it on?” in Russian

Two different verbs for “try”: clothes are приме́рить, food is попро́бовать.

велико́ and мало́

Russian has special short forms for clothes that do not fit: велико́ (too big) and мало́ (too small), both with a dative person: мне велико́, ей мало́. They agree with the garment: руба́шка велика́, брю́ки велики́.

In the fitting room

Приме́рочная is the fitting room — an adjectival noun, like ва́нная. The assistant may ask Подошло́? — did it fit? Answers: Да, беру́ (yes, I’ll take it), Не подошло́ (it didn’t fit), Поду́маю (I’ll think about it).

What you hear back

Коне́чно, вон там.Of course, over there.
Подошло́?Did it fit?
Сейча́с принесу́ друго́й разме́р.I’ll bring another size.
Э́то после́дний.That’s the last one.

Typical mistakes

Мо́жно попро́бовать? — about a jacket

Мо́жно приме́рить?

попро́бовать is for tasting.
