Splashing about in the sea is not the same verb as swimming lengths.

купа́ться = bathe, splash, enjoy the water. пла́вать = swim, as an ability or a sport. A child купа́ется in the sea; an athlete пла́вает in a pool.

Without -ся you are bathing someone else.

Я уме́ю купа́ться.

Я уме́ю пла́вать.

The skill is пла́вать.
