Books and reading

The vocabulary of the thing Russians are proudest of — and advice on which book to actually start with.

Quick answer

Reading is чита́ть; the thing read takes the accusative. A short story is расска́з, a novel рома́н — not a romance.

Talking about books

Что ты чита́ешь?What are you reading?
Я чита́ю Че́хова в оригина́ле.I am reading Chekhov in the original.
Э́та кни́га мне о́чень понра́вилась.I really liked this book.
Кто а́втор?Who is the author?

Where to start in the original

Not Dostoevsky. Start with Chekhov’s short stories — a few pages each, plain modern-sounding Russian, and complete in themselves. Then children’s classics such as Чу́к и Гек, then Bulgakov. Tolstoy’s sentences will still be waiting.

Typical mistakes

Я чита́ю кни́га.

Я чита́ю кни́гу.

The object takes the accusative.

рома́н = romance

рома́н = novel

A false friend; a romance is рома́нтика or рома́н as a love affair in context.
