How to say “What do you think?” in Russian

Russian asks “how do you think”, not “what”. Getting this one right is a quick win.

Quick answer

kak ty dúmayesh — как, not что — the single most common slip here

The options

What do you think? — informal
What do you think? — polite
What is your view? — more formal
What do you think about it? — with a topic
Your opinion?

как or что?

Without a topic it is always With an explicit topic, что appears together with об э́том: Что ты ду́маешь об э́том фи́льме?. A bare Что ты ду́маешь? sounds like you are asking what is going through their head right now.
