The grammar of headlines

Headlines drop verbs and stack genitives: Повыше́ние цен на бензи́н — a rise in petrol prices. Unpacking them is a reading skill of its own: find the first noun, then read each genitive as “of…”.

Что но́вого?What’s new?
По телеви́зору сказа́ли, что…They said on television that…
Я чита́л в но́востях.I read it in the news.

A word of advice

Politics is not neutral small talk in Russia, and a foreigner raising it can put the other person in an awkward position. Сло́жный вопро́с and Я не хочу́ обсужда́ть поли́тику are complete, polite answers — in both directions. This page exists so you can read and understand, not so you can interview people.
