Internet and chat

How Russians actually type — short, lowercase and full of clipped words you will not find in a textbook.

Quick answer

Chat Russian clips endings and drops stress entirely. спс = спаси́бо, норм = норма́льно, щас = сейча́с.

Short forms you will read

спсspsthanks (спаси́бо)
пжлpzhlplease (пожа́луйста)
нормnormfine (норма́льно)
щасshchasright now (сейча́с)
чёchyowhat (что)
щаshchain a sec
окokok
дрde-erbirthday (день рожде́ния)

A real exchange

— приве, ты щас свободен?— hey, are you free right now?
— норм, чё хотел?— yeah fine, what did you want?
— скинь ссылку плз— send me the link pls
— ща— one sec

Why it is written without stress or capitals

Nobody types stress marks, and lowercase is the default in messengers. Reading chat Russian is therefore its own skill — you are suddenly without the two crutches textbooks give you.

What not to copy

Clipped forms are fine with friends and wrong in an email to a landlord or an official. Keep спаси́бо, пожа́луйста, здра́вствуйте for anything written to someone you do not know. Чё in particular sounds rude in the wrong setting.

Typical mistakes

Writing спс in a formal email

Спаси́бо!

Abbreviations belong to private chat.

Reading щас as a typo

щас = сейча́с

It is a deliberate spoken-form spelling.

What does норм stand for?
