Quick answer
Друг stays fixed; the second word takes whatever case the verb needs: друг дру́га, друг дру́гу, друг с дру́гом, друг о дру́ге.
The forms
| Case | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| accusative | друг дру́га | Они́ лю́бят друг дру́га. |
| dative | друг дру́гу | Мы помога́ем друг дру́гу. |
| instrumental | друг с дру́гом | Они́ говоря́т друг с дру́гом. |
| prepositional | друг о дру́ге | Мы ду́маем друг о дру́ге. |
| genitive | друг у дру́га | Мы быва́ем друг у дру́га. |
Note where the preposition goes: between the two words, not in front. Друг с дру́гом, never с друг дру́гом. This is the detail that marks the construction out.
Not the same as -ся
Some verbs express mutuality with -ся: встреча́ться (meet each other), целова́ться (kiss), обнима́ться (hug), ссо́риться (quarrel). With those you do not need друг дру́га at all — it would be redundant.
The feminine variant
Among women, подру́га sometimes replaces друг: подру́га подру́ге. It is rare and optional — друг дру́гу is correct for everyone, of any gender.
друг = friend, but not here
The друг in друг дру́га is a frozen old form, not the modern noun “friend”. That is why it never declines and why друг дру́га can be used about enemies too.
Typical mistakes
