Quick answer
Сам emphasises who did it — “I did it myself”. Себя́ is the object — “I saw myself”. They are never interchangeable.
сам — the emphatic one
| Form | Used for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| сам | masculine | Я сам э́то сде́лал. |
| сама́ | feminine | Она́ сама́ пришла́. |
| само́ | neuter | Э́то само́ собо́й. |
| са́ми | plural / polite | Вы са́ми э́то ви́дели. |
It agrees with the person it emphasises and can stand before or after them. Nothing else in the sentence changes.
себя́ — the reflexive object
| Case | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| accusative / genitive | себя́ | Я ви́жу себя́ в зе́ркале. |
| dative | себе́ | Я купи́л себе́ кни́гу. |
| instrumental | собо́й | Возьми́ с собо́й зо́нт. |
| prepositional | о себе́ | Расскажи́те о себе́. |
Себя́ has no nominative — it can never be the subject, because it always points back at whoever is. It uses the same form for any person: я себя́, ты себя́, они́ себя́.
Both at once
The -ся connection
The reflexive ending on verbs like мы́ться and учи́ться is a worn-down себя́. Once you know that, он мо́ет себя́ vs он мо́ется stops being mysterious.
Typical mistakes
Я ви́жу сам в зе́ркале.
Я ви́жу себя́ в зе́ркале.
An object needs себя́.
Я себя́ сде́лал э́то.
Я сам сде́лал э́то.
Emphasis needs сам.
