Quick answer
Nearly every winter sport uses ката́ться на + prepositional: на лы́жах, на конька́х, на са́нках, на сноубо́рде.
The sports
The place
The kit
Saying what you do
На лы́жах, not лы́жами
Ката́ться always takes на plus the prepositional plural. And because skis, skates and sledges are plural-only nouns in Russian, you will never meet them in the singular: лы́жи, коньки́, са́нки.
Hockey is the big one
Ice hockey is the sport Russians follow most closely in winter, and the vocabulary leaks into everyday speech: ша́йба (puck), ледо́вая аре́на (ice arena), боле́ть за (to support a team). За кого́ боле́ешь? — who do you support? — is a standard conversation opener among men.
