How to say “Where do you live?” in Russian

A small-talk staple, and your first real use of the prepositional case.

Quick answer

Где вы живёте?

gdye vy zhivyóti — answered with в + prepositional — the case for being somewhere

The options

Где вы живёте?Where do you live? — polite
Где ты живёшь?Where do you live? — informal
Вы ме́стный?Are you local?
Вы давно́ здесь живёте?Have you lived here long?
В како́м райо́не?In which part of town?

The answer

Answer with в + prepositional: в Москве́, в Берли́не, в Ло́ндоне, в це́нтре. Countries work the same way: в Германии, в А́нглии. A few places take на: на Ура́ле, на Кавка́зе and, famously, на У́лице Ле́нина for street addresses.

Living how long

Давно́ covers both “long ago” and “for a long time”, so Вы давно́ здесь живёте? means “have you been living here long?”. The answer is a plain accusative: Два го́да — two years.

What you hear back

Я живу́ в Москве́.I live in Moscow.
Недалеко́ отсю́да.Not far from here.
Я здесь в о́тпуске.I’m here on holiday.
Два го́да уже́.Two years now.

Typical mistakes

Я живу́ в Москва́.

Я живу́ в Москве́.

Being somewhere takes the prepositional.

Где вы жить?

Где вы живёте?

The verb must be conjugated.
