про́бовать

Tasting food and giving something a go — one verb, and it loses its -ова- in the present.

All -овать verbs work this way: рисова́ть → рису́ю, танцева́ть → танцу́ю, рабо́тать is not one of them. про́бовать = taste or attempt; стара́ться = make an effort.
