Quick answer
Most verbs take the accusative. A sizeable minority demand the dative, the genitive or the instrumental, and a few insist on a preposition.
Dative verbs
| Verb | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| помога́ть | to help | Я помога́ю дру́гу. |
| звони́ть | to call | Я звоню́ ма́ме. |
| меша́ть | to disturb | Шум меша́ет мне. |
| ве́рить | to believe | Я ве́рю тебе́. |
| сове́товать | to advise | Я сове́тую вам… |
| нра́виться | to be pleasing | Мне нра́вится э́то. |
Four of these are verbs English treats as taking a direct object, which is exactly why they need learning: помога́ть кому́, not кого́.
Genitive and instrumental verbs
| Case | Verbs | Example |
|---|---|---|
| genitive | боя́ться, жела́ть, ждать (things) | Я бою́сь темноты́. |
| instrumental | занима́ться, по́льзоваться, интересова́ться | Я занима́юсь спо́ртом. |
| instrumental | станови́ться, быть (as predicate) | Он стал врачо́м. |
| instrumental | горди́ться, management with | Я горжу́сь тобо́й. |
По́льзоваться is the one travellers need: по́льзоваться ка́ртой, по́льзоваться телефо́ном — to use a map, to use a phone.
Verbs with fixed prepositions
Learn them as phrases
Nobody memorises a list of case-governing verbs successfully. What works is learning the verb together with a model phrase — помога́ть дру́гу, занима́ться спо́ртом, боя́ться темноты́ — so the case comes along with the meaning.
Typical mistakes
