Nouns ending in -ь

The one ending that does not tell you the gender — but there are rules that cover most of it.

Quick answer

A final -ь can be masculine or feminine. Reliable signals: -ость and -есть are always feminine, -тель is always masculine.

The rules that hold

EndingGenderExamples
-ость, -естьfeminine, no exceptionsно́вость, ра́дость, но́чь → also све́жесть
-тельmasculineучи́тель, писа́тель, руководи́тель
months in -ьmasculineянва́рь, февра́ль, апре́ль, ию́нь, ию́ль, сентя́брь…
soft sign after ж, ш, ч, щfeminineночь, дочь, вещь, по́мощь

Those four rules cover the large majority of -ь nouns you will meet in your first year.

The ones to learn by heart

мой слова́рьmy dictionary — m.
мой деньmy day — m.
мой па́рольmy password — m.
мой шампу́ньmy shampoo — m.
моя́ о́чередьmy queue — f.
моя́ крова́тьmy bed — f.
моя́ дверьmy door — f.
моя́ сольmy salt — f.

Masculine favourites: слова́рь, день, па́роль, шампу́нь, руб(ль), ого́нь, путь. Feminine favourites: дверь, крова́ть, о́чередь, соль, жизнь, любо́вь, тетра́дь, но́чь.

Why it matters immediately

Gender decides the possessive, the adjective and the past tense: мой слова́рь лежа́л but моя́ дверь лежа́ла. Learn each -ь noun together with мой or моя́ — never on its own.

путь is the odd one

Путь (way, path) is masculine but declines like a feminine noun in every case except the instrumental (путём). It is the only noun of its kind in Russian.

Typical mistakes
