How to say “I have” in Russian

Russian does not own things — things are simply located at you.

Quick answer

У меня́ есть брат — literally “at me there is a brother”. The owner takes у + genitive, the thing owned stays in the nominative. The negative is у меня́ нет + genitive.

The pattern

PersonFormExample
we / you / theyу нас / у вас / у нихУ них есть де́ти.

Note the н after the preposition: у него́, not “у его́”.

When to drop есть

Use есть when the point is that the thing exists. Drop it when the point is what the thing is like.

I have a car. — the fact
My car is new. — the description
Do you have a menu?

The negative

I have no time.
They have no children.
I don’t have this book.

After нет the thing goes into the genitive — and есть disappears.

име́ть exists, but is formal and used with abstract nouns. Everyday possession is у + genitive.
