Motion verbs with prefixes

Six prefixes turn two verbs into most of the movement vocabulary you will ever need.

Quick answer

при- arrive · у- leave · в- enter · вы- exit · по- set off · пере- cross. Stick them on -йти́ or -е́хать.

The six that matter

PrefixOn footMeaning
при-прийти́to arrive, to come
у-уйти́to leave, to go away
в- / во-войти́to enter
вы-вы́йтиto go out — вы- is always stressed
по-пойти́to set off
пере-перейти́to cross

With transport, the same prefixes go on -е́хать: прие́хать, уе́хать, въе́хать, вы́ехать.

Each prefix has its preposition

Он пришёл домо́й.He came home.
Она́ ушла́ с рабо́ты.She left work. — у- goes with с or из
Мы вошли́ в дом.We entered the house. — в- with в
Я вы́шел из метро́.I came out of the metro. — вы- with из
Перейди́те доро́гу.Cross the road.

Prefixed verbs are perfective

A prefixed motion verb is perfective: прийти́ = to arrive, once, completed. Its imperfective partner is built on the multidirectional stem: приходи́ть (to come regularly). That is the pattern for all of them.

Typical mistakes

Я вышёл

Я вы́шел

The prefix вы- always takes the stress.

Он пришёл из до́ма — meaning he came home

Он пришёл домо́й.

домо́й is the fixed form for “homewards”.
