Adverbs

The easiest word class in Russian: they never change, and you already know how to build them.

Quick answer

Take the adjective, put -о on the stem: хоро́ший → хорошо́, бы́стрый → бы́стро. Adverbs never decline.

Building them

AdjectiveAdverbEnglish
хоро́шийхорошо́well
плохо́йпло́хоbadly
бы́стрыйбы́строfast
ме́дленныйме́дленноslowly
гро́мкийгро́мкоloudly
ти́хийти́хоquietly

Careful with the stress: хоро́ший but хорошо́ — it moves to the end.

They carry impersonal sentences

The same -о form works as a whole sentence with no subject: Хо́лодно (it’s cold), Мне ску́чно (I’m bored), Здесь ти́хо (it’s quiet here).

Сего́дня хо́лодно.It’s cold today.
Мне тру́дно.It’s hard for me.
Здесь о́чень ти́хо.It’s very quiet here.

Typical mistakes

Он говори́т ру́сский хоро́ший.

Он хорошо́ говори́т по-ру́сски.

The verb needs an adverb, not an adjective.

Мне хоро́ший.

Мне хорошо́.

Impersonal sentences take the adverb form.

Check yourself

Он ___ говори́т по-ру́сски. — He speaks Russian well.
