Home/Grammar/в vs на
A1ComparisonTwo words, one English

в vs на

Both mean “in”, “at” or “on” depending on the sentence. The choice is mostly a list you learn — but a short one.

Quick answer

в for enclosed spaces, cities and countries: в шко́ле, в Москве́. на for surfaces, events and a fixed list: на столе́, на рабо́те, на по́чте.

в

inside something

  • Cities and countries:
  • Transport you sit inside: в авто́бусе
  • Containers:

I am at school.

на

on a surface, at an event

  • Surfaces:
  • Events:
  • Open places:
  • The list:

The book is on the table.

The case depends on movement

QuestionCaseExample
(where to)accusativeв шко́лу, на рабо́ту
(from where)genitive with

The pairing matters: what takes в comes back with из, what takes на comes back with с.

The на list worth memorising

на рабо́те (at work), на по́чте (at the post office), на вокза́ле (at the station), на ры́нке (at the market), на у́лице (outside), на ю́ге (in the south), на Украи́не / в Украи́не — the last one is politically charged; today в Украи́не is the standard.

Typical mistakes

Work belongs to the на list.

на for the post office — and if it is around the corner, you walk there.

Check yourself

— He is at work.

рабо́та is on the на list: на рабо́те.
